Tips & Tricks

Red Means Stop
The value of a red warning light on your dash that lights at low oil pressure cannot be over emphasized. I believe this will save you hundreds of dollars in engine repairs. You will see a red light when you will not notice a gauge and you will see the light instantly. Any questions about how this works? Call us!

High Speed Engine Miss on the Straights

What if your engine misses at high speed going down the straight away? There are many culprits to look for. Generally we don’t have time to go on the track after changing one of these things as a time. So this is the time when you need the shotgun approach!

Here is what we recommend in the following order:

  • If the car will start with the battery then the battery is charged enough. If not, charge or replace the battery. Sometimes a broken plate will cause the miss--go ahead and replace the battery if you have a spare.
  • Be sure the battery wires and spark plug and coil wires are well connected and tight. If you can't get fire from the points or plug wires, the tach can be suspect. Everyone should have a test light to trace the voltage from the battery to the starter to the ignition switch on the dash and to the coil.
  • Spray the manifold with Windex or carb cleaner type stuff to see if it leaks. With the engine at idle, the spray will change the idle RPM if there is a leak.
  • Check the fittings on your fuel cell, check for a blockage in the bottom of the tank and replace the fuel filter. When you replace the filter, take the fuel line off and hold it down to be sure that you have gas coming out from the fuel cell.
  • Clean the main jet, replace or clean the needle and seat. Or replace the carb.

Engine Misses Around a Tight Corner

If the engine misses after gong around a sharp or tight corner, like it is starving for gas or flooding, probably the top of the carb is warped. Gas is sloshing from the float bowl into the venturi area. This can be repaired by removing the carburetor top, putting some type of sealant on both sides of the carb gasket in a line between the venturi area and the float chamber. Permatex Aviation Gasket Sealer is recommended.
